Emmy van Leersum

Emmy van Leersum (1930-1984) a famous Dutch jewellery designer, studied at the Instituut voor Kunstnijverheidsonderwijs in Amsterdam - now  Rietveld Academy - from 1958 until 1962. In 1963 she studied at the Konstfack Skolan in Stockholm, together with Gijs Bakker, whom she married in 1966.

In 1967 Emmy and Gijs organized a revolutionary jewellery show in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, on the occasion of an exhibition of  contemporary jewellery. She was invited to lecture and join panel discussions and workshops all over the world.

Awards include the 1968 Gold and Silver Medals at the International Jewellery Exhibition, Jablonec, Czechoslovakia and the Herbert-Hofmann-Gedächtnispreis, München 1983.  From 1966 she had solo-exhibitons and participated in group-exhibitions in The Netherlands and abroad.
In 1993 Museum Het Kruithuis organized  a retrospective exhibition and published an acompanying monography 'Broken Lines Emmy van Leersum 1930 - 1984'.

Her designs can be found in collections of the Dutch government, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Victoria and Albert Museum London, Power House Museum, Sydney and other museum collections in Holland and abroad.
